HOWZAAT! Arthur Brant Cup Winners 2011

Congratulations to Hirst Courtney Cricket Club who won the Arthur Brant Cup. A fine effort by all the players and staff involved. Here's captain Craig Lawson receiving his winners medal.

A few words from our Captain...

heworth(home)
after losing yet another toss we were stuck in to bat on a damp wicket. with no tich, nige emery, chris, kenny, tom, tony it gave a good chance to other guys to hopefully show we have strength in depth. a good start from goose and phil on a slow wicket we raced to 30ish before goose was bowled off his pads, we then lost nige goddard in the 50s. same went for not many leaving us in a precarious positon with 3 down, mark entered at number 5 and showed his experience in chipping away just playing good cricket in a stand of 158 with phil, eventually falling for a fine 46. the runs continued right to the end giving us a fine total of 244 for 4. phil finishing unbeaten on 118.
heworth would not have got the runs with 2 innings, sam with a 3 wicket haul from 5 overs helped by a cracking catch from our veteran stumper loggy stones, we bowled goose, mark, beany, ryan, sam hinch and welcomed the return of the Hirst rocket dave howsam who bowled 3 overs picking up one wicket. heworth were eventually out for 132ish giving us maximum 30 points, this leaves us 81 points in front of 3rd place and just about secures promotion to the 1st division, 24 points behind ovington who we play next week. well done everyone, another great effort.

thorpe willoughby(scothern cup final at hemingbrough)
after finally winning a toss i stuck thorpe in on a cloudy afternoon and a good but slightly worn helpful looking wicket, a decision to open the bowling with spin to surprise thorpe paid early dividends when kenny bowled 2 cracking balls to remove opener and number 3. he bowled a cracking spell of 10 overs 2 for a measly 10 runs. mark getting a run-out with a direct hit off kens bowling, good spells from sam, chris and tich kept the wickets flowing with thorpe tumbling to 103 all out. a great effort against a team who have only lost one game this year, in reply after a slow start and few swings and misses tich soon got in to his stride and crashed the ball all over the place. a stand of 97 with me chipping in a watchful 19 soon had the game won. cheered on by our very own barmy army who made the day even more special. a great win and another piece of silverware. thank you to everyone for making it such a cracking day.

Airmyn (home - Win it & we win the 2nd Division)
After winning the toss and pointing out the 2 century makers from last week we decided to have a bat knowing a win would hand us the second division title opener phil and tich carried on from were they left off at carlton with another 100 partnership before phil fell for 40 and tich making 97, goose(21no) came in with mark(16) and pushed the score along to set a target of 187, airmyn got off the a good start befoe the inroduction of goose taking 4 for 8 and young tommy blacker taking 3 for 8 (Well done Tom Tom) with mark and beany picking up a wicket a piece to bowl there 10 men out for 105, well done lads topping of a great week after winning the cup on monday to wrap the league up with a game spare!

Burn (evening league - Arthur Brant Cup Final)

After loosing the toss we were asked to have a bowl, sam was chucked the new ball and he made burn regret having a bat picking up 3 wickets in a very tidy spell, he was backed up well by Nigel, Goose, Beany, Mark and Tich who all bowled very well, at the half way interval burn set us a modest 104 to win, Phil and Tich set off like a train, and after 6 overs it looked like we would be lifting the trophy before the 11th over until 4 quick wickets went down, Tich(47), Phil, Goose and Nige all were out in the space of 5 overs which left Sam(26no) and Mark(16no) needing to rebuild the innings to which they did in great effect reaching the winning target with 4 overs to spare!! Well down everyone, a great team effort and a very well deserved first trophy of the season!! Let's go get us some more now!

Selby(away)
having let tich toss up to try to change our luck, we found ourselves batting first again after tich lost the toss. on a very unpredictable wicket we struggled early on with the loss of myself and nige goddard, a very good stand between nige emery(60)and tich(42) gave us a more acceptable start, a good innings from sam(38) taking over from tich and excellent contributions from mark(24) and tom(24) gave us a competative total of 212.
in reply sam removed the opening batsman in the first over and soon put them behind the clock with tight bowling from sam & chris. despite 80 from lee clayton selby never looked like knocking off the runs with good tactical field placings and good bowling from kenny, mark & beany. sam got 3 wickets, chris 2, ken 2, mark and beany 1 each. a fine effort for a must win game. well done to everyone

stillingfleet(away) sunday cup semi final
i decided that cos i called tails on sat and lost i would call tails again, law of averages says it had to be tails today, up went the coin and blinking heck, it came up heads. they decided to have a bat, well they sort of tried, a very poor team indeed for a semi final. they managed to muster a grand total of 104 all out( they only had 10 men) on a good batting track. again sam and mark bowled very very well early on and then we turned to spin, kenny bowling 12 very nice overs for 2 wickets for 21 and tich finishing with great figures of 4 for 10. again we knocked off the runs at a canter off just 14 overs, tich with 45 and goose unbeaten on 25. so we get to another final which is at hemingbrough on sun aug 7th. there are 2 good teams in the other semi which as rained off so we hope for a good competative final and another great day for the club with plenty of support. well done to the club on reaching another final. very proud of everyone.

fulfordgate(away) sat
plenty of rain the night before had made a dodgy looking wicket even more dodgier. i lost the toss and was a bit shocked when their capt said we will have a bat. i thought NICE ONE.. sam and mark bowled excellent early spells and sam was soon among the wickets. bowling 12 overs 5 for 30, backed up nicely by malford who bowled well for 2 for 33 off 12 overs. beany bowled a couple fo good overs for 2 wickets and tich got the other one to leave fulfordgate all out for 69. we knocked off the runs comfortably for the loss of one wicket, the plan was to get to 69 and try and hit a 6 to gain an extra point, einstein goose decided to whack a 4 through mid-wicket when we were on 67 so unfortunately were didn,t get the extra point, i hope all our supporters show there displeasure towards goose on next seeing him :-) well done guys another fine win.

Pollington (home)
After loosing the toss pollington decided to have a bat first, a good opening partnership from jamie and sam (one for the future i think) saw the struggling on 13 for 3 off 8 overs, sam taking the wickets, James Hinchcliffe came on to bowl and took the danger wicket with a good return catch, from the other end taking 2 wickets was Tom Blacker well bowled again lads! we were set a target of 127 to win, early wickets for pollington saw us in a spot of trouble before Goose and Malf got stuck in both making 33, with Sam Dunn and Tony both making good contributions of 18, we made the target with 10 balls to spare, welll done lads!

Airmyn (away) Cup
Monday night saw us travel to airmyn in the semi final of the snaith league cup, and winning the toss we decided to have a bat on a 'Tradiitional' airmyn wicket, after loosing tony early on Pihl and Goose kept the score ticking over, when Phil departed for 18 Sam Dunn took over scoring a quick 44, Goose finishing with 40 and the rest chipping in to set a target of 148 to win, when the airmyn batters came out the looked scared of the wicket, not aided by pace and accuracy from Sam Dunn taking 5 wickets! Beany and Kenny also took a couple of wickets and a nice tight spell from Nigel Emery reduced them to 80-9 at the close. Well done lads another final to look forward too!

kelfield (home)
we lost the toss and kelfield elected to bat first, a good pacy spell from sam brought no reward. but chris from the bottom end grabbed early wickets. taking the first 4 kelfield wickets, leaving him on to grab his 5th he duly obliged and then nabbed his 6th. with a 10 for on the cards he bowled his full 12 overs finishing with 7 for 34. well done chris. needing to stay ahead of our rivals we needed the maximum 30 points. mark bowled some generous overs(under orders) from the top end finishing with a couple of wickets and they finished all out for 129. looking forward to a leisurely afternoon of umpiring things really didn,t go to plan as early wickets tumbled and we were left struggling on 39 for 5 after a fine spell from a young kelfield bowler. a stand of 90 from goose(44no) and a nervous skipper 46no restored order after our early losses and gave us 30 very good points. a very good game and credit to kelfield for the early pressure.

Woodhouse grange(away)
we lost the toss and were not shocked to be batting first on a very wet wicket, we struggled all 40 overs as the wicket was doing allsorts, with plenty of lift for there bowlers who were happy to bang it in short. we managed to muster 158 for 9. with nige goddard(29) phil(28) mark(18) tony(18) nige emery a quick (15) and our good friends extras(24) we had our team chat and knew if we bowled well it would be difficult for them to score runs, sam dunn gave us the start we required with some good quick bowling, backed up nicely by chris carden. woodhouse were never in the hunt and were easily dismissed for 115. sam with 4 wickets, chris 2. nige goddard 2 and beany 1. well done boys, a really good win. keep up the kick ass work next week.

Airmyn (away)
After winning the toss on a freshly showered track we elected to bat first, we lost an early wicket but after a stand on 100 between Phil (61) and Goose (50no) we managed 141-2 at the half way stage. There reply started steadily with Beany bowling 4 tidy overs picking up a wicket, a wicket a piece for Goose and Sam Hinch brought the super kids on to bowl, first up Tommy Blacker with his first ball taking a wicket and another 3 balls later finishing with figures of 3 overs 2 for 22, next up for his senior debue was James Hinchcliffe he bowled an excellent spell taking 2 wickets in his second over finihsing the 2-12 off his 3 overs, airmyn finishing on 125-7, congratulations to the team and expecially the younger ones!!
